At Alathena, we believe a true education goes beyond classes and marks. Education should build character and prepare students for what comes next in their studies, careers and future lives. Alathena’s Guidance department is multi-functional, helping students with their personal growth and intellectual development. Our counsellors assist students with the proper selection of courses and develop the individual plan that will lead to their preferred pathway to university. They also assist students with their university application during their senior year in Grade 12. Moreover, our counsellors are trained to help students with emotional or social support when required. 

We are proud that our multilingual staff can help students and parents shorten the cultural distance. Language and culture shouldn’t be barriers to a high quality education for students or effective communication with parents. Our guidance counsellors, teacher and admission officers are able to speak English, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), French, German, Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese as well as other foreign languages to help students and parents feel comfortable and connected. Parents can contact these multilingual resources by telephone or email whenever they have questions, concerns or are looking for an update on their child’s progress and well-being.

Every student studying at Alathena requires medical coverage. Alathena International Academy requires students, whose parents are not residents of Canada, to take out the medical insurance that is offered by the school to protect students should they need medical attention. 

Home Stay is the most common choice and the best accommodation for international students arriving in Canada. The advantage is that the landlord is a person who has been declared and filed by the Ministry of Education. They have no criminal record, are kind and tolerant of international students, and have legal obligations to protect the safety of students. Homestay families will be preparing three meals a day for our students providing a dietary guarantee for those who have just left home and set foot on foreign land, which not only saves time, but also enjoys food with Canadian characteristics. Another advantage of living at home is that by communicating with landlords, students could gain more opportunities to improve their speaking of English opportunity. The students who live at home generally said that through communication with the local families in Canada, their speaking level has greatly improved within a year. AIA carefully selects warm and cheerful landlords for each student to live with, so that students can experience the family atmosphere and cultural traditions of Canadians at close range while receiving meticulous care.

We believe that not only academic study is important for our students, but extracurricular activities play a significant role in the overall education of our students. By participating in musical, drama, sport events, community volunteer work, and other activities sponsored by the school, students learn how to develop leadership skills and appreciate their civic duties and responsibility facilitative to living with others in harmony.
